Research assistant position announcement

The Facoltà di Teologia di Lugano, affiliated to the Università della Svizzera italiana, invites applications for one position of research assistant, as part of the project: “A material Approach to the Qumran Quest”, funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation and directed by Prof. Dr. Marcello Fidanzio.

Tasks
The research assistant will participate in an ongoing project dedicated to the Qumran Caves 1Q, 2Q, 3Q, 6Q. The scientific goals of the project are to contribute to answering the questions: when, how, and why were dead sea scrolls deposited to the natural caves at Qumran? and to provide the final report on the archaeology of those caves and digital access to the data (materials as well as documentation) from the first excavations conducted there (1949-1952).
Accordingly, the research assistant is expected to: participate in a dedicated research seminar; help in the organization of a workshop with leading scholars aimed at discussing the contents of the research before its final stage; help in the organization of and participate in surveys at the Qumran caves and data collection trips; work in the digitization program of excavation materials and archival documents; work on editing for publications. The research assistant is expected to collaborate with other team members and participate in a variety of additional tasks for the implementation of the project.

Candidate profile
We look for a research assistant with a Master or a PhD in archaeology, history, theology or related disciplines:

  • The candidate skills and interests should be compatible with the objectives of the research project;
  • Be proficient in written and spoken English and have a basic knowledge of the Italian language;
  • Possess organizational skills;
  • Be available to travel as necessary for the implementation of the project.

Preferred qualifications include:

  • Experience in archaeological excavations and/or publications;
  • Knowledge of the basic categories for the study of pottery;
  • Experience in research projects and project writing;
  • Experience in text editing.

Practical information
The project is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF). The position is available for a time period of one year starting from June 1st 2024.
The yearly gross salary is 50’040 CHF.
It might be possible to renew the contract or find new forms of collaboration depending on the developments of the research; if the successful applicant is a student with a master's degree, the work as a research assistant may be a year of preparation towards a PhD.
